The THREADs project led by Kajaani University of Applied Sciences kicked off with a two-day trip to Iceland, to the town of Blönduós, where industry professionals put their wise heads together to think about the secrets of textile recycling. In recent years, Blönduós has become known for its connection with textiles. The town has been made home by a wool washery, Iceland's only textile museum Heimilisiðnaðarsafnið and the Icelandic Textile Center, featuring a residency program for international textile artists and scholars.

THREADs is an abbreviation of the condensed description of the project: Textile and Habiliment Reuse for the Environment and NPA Area Development. As the official name suggests, the project is a three-year project funded by the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic program, which aims to comprehensively renew the approach to textile waste management. THREADs is a continuation of the preparatory project focused on the logistics and consumption challenges of textile waste in the NPA area.

"Forge Design Factory and the Technological University of the Shannon are very pleased to join THREADs partners to tackle the shared challenge of climate change and address resource sufficiency in the NPA region. FDF & TUS bring knowledge in design and sustainability and will lead WP2, with a particular focus on circular design approaches for sustainable textile futures, strengthening knowledge within our consumers and our creative communities and supporting transnational, collaboration through design", says Rebecca Marsden, the manager of Forge Design Factory at Technological University of the Shannon.
