THREAD-Prep

Textile and Habiliment Reuse for the Environment and NPA Area Development

What we do

Textile wastes are a significant contributor to landfill and fast fashion is now recognised as having an unacceptable carbon footprint, therefore, there is an urgent need for transition to an environmentally and socially responsible circular model in the sector. This is particularly challenging for the NPA region as sparsely populated areas result in long waste transport distances with limited volumes of valuable waste fractions that could be recycled. In this preparatory we project seek to explore the feasibility of textile reuse and recycling across the region. The project will conclude with the main project application.

Final report

The THREAD project explored the challenges and potential for recycling textile waste in the NPA region. It conducted a market analysis of textile waste, including data on waste volumes, processing capacity, and logistics. The project reviewed current recycling technologies and identified alternative methods for potential use in the region.

Throughout the project, there were several face-to-face and online meetings with partners and stakeholders. These meetings helped build knowledge about textile waste and highlighted differences between regions in waste management and social inclusion.

The project gathered information on technologies for improving textile waste collection and sorting, such as scanning technologies for sorting, sensors for monitoring collection containers, and moisture sensors for preventing spoilage. It also assessed local resource needs for textile collection and sorting.

Common challenges identified included a lack of public education on textile waste and skills needed for circularity. Opportunities were found in community engagement, upcycling, and exploring new business models for textile waste.

The project concluded with a proposal for a larger initiative involving 9 partners from 5 countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Ireland), aiming for a more sustainable approach to textile waste through circular economy practices.
