The SUB project hosted its first Peer-to-Peer learning exchange trip for entrepreneurs in East Lapland of Finland. The mission of the Peer-to-Peer Programme is to offer entrepreneurs from all partner countries the opportunity to learn new and different ways to run cycling businesses and gain inspiration for their own ventures. The exchange provided a chance to share the experience of winter cycling with entrepreneurs and colleagues from Sweden, Ireland, and Iceland.

The chilly January program centered around winter cycling and related experiences. The first day we introduced participants to the beautiful landscapes of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, guided by experts from Bliss Adventure. Winter cycling and wilderness skiing were on the agenda, offering a thrilling way to embrace the activities and landscapes. The day was filled with invaluable experiences, including:

  • Learning the importance of clear and effective instructions to ensure safety and enjoyment.
  • Gaining new perspectives through fascinating storytelling about the region’s winter flora and fauna, which deepened the group’s connection to the area.
  • Learning winter riding techniques, with tips that added value to everyone, regardless of skill level.
  • Gaining hands-on experience with the basics of wilderness skiing.
  • Embracing a purposeful cycling mindset that added a layer of meaning to the adventure: Cycling for a reason.

After a day of exploration, we concluded the evening with a traditional Finnish sauna and ice bath experience, an essential part of the local cultural heritage. Guests took on the cold challenge with enthusiasm, and their positive feedback showed how much they appreciated the ice-cold dip.

The second day started with a brief visit to Tapionniemen kyläkartano, where we learned how to run cycle-friendly operations and lodging services in a rural village.

The group then travelled to Salla, where we enjoyed a hearty lunch before hearing insightful presentations from Erkki Parkkinen, the mayor of Salla, and tourism representative Heli Karjalainen. They shared valuable information about the area, its tourism offerings, and sustainable travel practices in Salla. After the presentations, we headed to Salla Wilderness Park for a sleigh ride through the stunning snowy landscapes, with a stop to feed reindeer. The activity concluded with a cozy gathering by the fire, where participants warmed up with delicious sausages and hot beverages while reflecting on the outdoor adventures, we just had experienced.

The two-day exchange wrapped up with a thorough analysis of the eBike to Wilderness Skiing product during an international workshop, gaining insightful feedback that highlighted the exceptional offerings of Bliss Adventure. The event concluded in the cozy atmosphere of Santa’s Little Village in Kemijärvi, where we enjoyed a delicious dinner and reflected on the enriching experiences we had shared.

The SUB team is incredibly grateful to all the participants for making the Learning Exchange in East Lapland such a meaningful and fun experience. The adventure not only deepened our understanding of the region’s outdoor activities but also fostered a sense of community and cultural appreciation that will resonate long after the exchange ended.
