OatFrontiers stakeholder workshop in Iceland promotes oat cultivation

OatFrontiers recent stakeholder workshop in Iceland introduced oat cultivars and shared insights from several cereal projects. Participants learned about the health benefits of oats, innovative research from Wales, inspiring stories from Northern cereal projects and an Icelandic farmer’s success with oat cultivation. The event also featured field trials showcasing oat potential in Iceland.

The recent stakeholder workshop organized by Oat Frontiers project in Iceland was a resounding success. The workshop aimed to introduce oat cultivars to Iceland and inspire local oat production by sharing valuable lessons from previous cereal cultivation projects and experiences from Northern regions.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the health benefits of oats from the recent Healthy Oats project. They were also inspired by several Northern cereal projects focused on increasing cereal production and use. The workshop featured insightful presentation on oat research and breeding in Wales, and a compelling success story from an Icelandic farmer who cultivates oats without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides.

A highlight of the afternoon was the field trials of oats, where participants could see firsthand different oat cultivars and the potential of oat cultivation in Iceland.

In addition to the workshop, OatFrontiers project partners held a meeting to discuss the initial analyses from the field trials. They also planned future activities, including upcoming quality analyses, field days, and workshops scheduled for 2025.
