The Western Development Commission (WDC) is delighted to announce an exciting collaboration with the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre as part of the N-LITE (Literary Tourism Immersive Technology Acceleration) project. Following a competitive open call in May, the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre was chosen to participate. This initiative aims to leverage cutting-edge digital technology to bring the rich literary and cultural heritage of Rathcroghan to life through immersive and interactive experiences.

This partnership will transform the storytelling of Rathcroghan's heritage into a dynamic and engaging experience. Advanced technologies such as game engine visualisation and 3D modelling will be employed to transport visitors into Ireland’s storied landscapes and literary tales.

Ian Brannigan, Head of Regional Development at the WDC, explains the strategic importance of the partnership: "This innovative project is a game-changer for the western region of Ireland. By integrating modern technology with our rich literary traditions, we are setting a new standard for cultural and economic development."

Mary Keaveney, Project Lead for the WDC, highlights the technological aspect: "The potential of technologies like game engine visualisation and 3D modelling to revolutionise literary tourism is immense. They allow us to create engaging and interactive experiences that bring our literary heritage to life in entirely new ways."

The primary objective of this partnership is to drive economic progress within the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) region by introducing innovative digital solutions that promote place-based literary tourism. The immersive platform developed through N-LITE will appeal to new demographics and enhance visitors' understanding and appreciation of Rathcroghan’s unique heritage.

Visitors to Rathcroghan can look forward to an immersive journey through its historical and mythological landscapes, including the legendary Oweynagat (Cave of the Cats), described in ancient texts as Ireland’s “Gate to Hell” and entrance to the Otherworld.

This collaboration utilises state-of-the-art immersive technologies to create an interactive experience that is both educational and entertaining. The N-LITE project is expected to bring significant benefits to both visitors and the local community by making Rathcroghan’s heritage accessible and engaging to a wider audience, thus enhancing cultural tourism and stimulating local economic growth.

Daniel Curley, Manager at Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, shares his enthusiasm: "This collaboration is a tremendous opportunity for us. It will not only enhance the way we present our heritage but also attract and engage a younger tech-savvy audience."

Rhona McGrath, Arts Officer at Roscommon County Council, has welcomed the initiative stating: “This collaboration will enhance the significance of this centre and ancient site and its important contribution to the arts and literary tourism in County Roscommon.”

Funded by the Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme, N-LITE aims to leverage technology and foster innovation to generate employment opportunities and drive economic progress within the NPA region. The project, with a total budget of €1.499.970 million, is coordinated by the Western Development Commission and includes several international partners.

Running from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026, N-LITE includes key activities such as exploring the potential of literary tourism, developing a technological foundation for the sector, engaging with stakeholders, and creating a digital innovation toolkit. The project will support SMEs in adopting immersive technology, ensure sustainable tourism practices, and develop pilot actions focusing on youth literary tourism.
