The regional anthem of Kainuu, Nälkämaan laulu (Song of the Hunger Land), stands as a cultural emblem, reflecting the resilience and pride of its people. Written by renowned Finnish author Ilmari Kianto and set to music by Oskar Merikanto, the anthem was first performed in 1911 and continues to resonate as a symbol of Kainuu’s spirit.

Ilmari Kianto, whose 150th birth anniversary is celebrated in 2024, played a vital role in shaping the cultural identity of Kainuu. Though born in Pulkkila, Kianto spent much of his life in Suomussalmi, where he worked as a writer and built his artist's home, Turjanlinna. His works, including the lyrics of Nälkämaan laulu, vividly depict the lives and landscapes of Kainuu, making him a cornerstone of Finnish literary heritage. Visitors can explore Kianto's legacy through the Turjanlinna Museum, a key site in Suomussalmi that celebrates his contributions.

This anniversary year is a focal point for literary tourism in Kainuu, aligning with efforts to showcase the region’s rich cultural history through projects like N-LITE. Literary tourism in Kainuu promotes the region’s famed writers, such as Kianto, and invites visitors to explore its cultural landmarks, festivals, and the profound connection between literature and the region's identity. As part of Kianto’s anniversary celebrations, the anthem has been reimagined into an electronic symphonic metal masterpiece, led by Casey Sabol and featuring artists like Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast), Antti Hyyrynen (Stam1na), and kantele virtuoso Ida Elina. Released earlier this year, this contemporary rendition blends Finnish folklore with modern metal and electronic music, offering a genre-defying experience that bridges tradition and innovation.

The ambitious project was initiated at the Sotkamo International Music Camp and brought to life in collaboration with the municipalities of Sotkamo and Suomussalmi, the Regional Council of Kainuu, and all eight municipalities in the region. The accompanying music video, a visual celebration of Kainuu’s landscapes and heritage, is a testament to this collective effort.

This revitalized anthem serves as a beacon for Kainuu’s cultural tourism initiatives, aligning seamlessly with the goals of the N-LITE project. By linking literary history with contemporary creative expressions, the region highlights its unique cultural identity and invites visitors to experience its stories, landscapes, and traditions. The song and its music video complement events like the Suomussalmi Book Fair, a key literary event that celebrates the region’s rich literary tradition.
