Solar Cell Grant Program Strengthens Iceland's Energy Future

To support renewable energy, Orkustofnun, Iceland's National Energy Authority, provided grants for solar cells through The Energy Centre.

This program works alongside the HYBES project, which helps make it easier to install solar panels and encourages the use of hybrid energy systems.

The agency organised meetings to introduce grant programs, provide guidelines for installation, and tackle challenges in connecting solar power to the national grid. They worked with distribution companies, the national grid operator, and educational institutions to create standard installation protocols and training paths for future solar installers. This comprehensive strategy aimed to make it easier for people to adopt solar energy and support Iceland's overall renewable energy goals.

As a result, earlier this year, Orkustofnun announced a competitive grant program for solar cell installations, open to all applicants regardless of residency or occupation. The grants covered up to 50% of material costs and are reimbursed post-installation upon submission of invoices. The program prioritised projects based on specific criteria: off-grid properties, users on rural rates, and those in electrically heated areas. Due to high demand, with 90 applications received, funding was allocated primarily to off-grid projects or those reliant on diesel generators. These installations are expected to reduce oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with governmental energy policies and commitments.

The solar cell grant program and the HYBES project represent two sides of the same coin—practical financial support for the immediate adoption of solar technology and strategic collaboration to remove systemic barriers to long-term renewable energy integration.
