A workshop co-hosted by the European Commission and OSPAR took place in Brussels on March 20th and 21st, focusing on measures to mitigate marine litter, particularly from end-of-life (EOL) fishing gear.

The aim of the event was to create a cooperative space where experts and stakeholders could share insights on the management of fishing gear waste, advocate for circularity, and discuss policies related to the end-of-life and disposal of fishing gear.

The event was organized as a hybrid workshop with invited guests as well as digital participants. The workshop consisted of panel discussions, presentations, and break-out sessions with smaller group conversations.

Maria Pettersson from Sotenäs Municipality showcased how local governments and industries can enhance recycling processes for used fishing gear through collaboration. It highlights the innovative approach taken by the municipality and how to tackle marine plastic pollution by focusing on circular economy principles.
