CIRCNETS-team reunites in Iceland
The fourth CIRCNETS partner meeting with various activities was held in the autumnal Reykjavik
CIRCNETS-team met for a fourth partner meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, on the 5th and 6th of November 2024. The meeting was hosted by MarEco and as usual, checking the progress of the work packages was first on the menu. Discussions were had on gathering information for the deliverable reports D.1.2.1 and D.1.3.1, which address the quantities and qualities of fishing gear in the NPA region and the EOL gear collection and responsibilities in the NPA region, respectively. The progress of the other reports was also talked about, as well as the dissemination activities of the project with some webinars and workshops, belonging to the WP2 and WP3, already having been held. Future national workshops were planned, as well as how to execute national dissemination campaigns for fishers, which would be important to target relevant stakeholders impacted by the EOL fishing gear collection. The first meeting day also included a site visit to a plastic recycler Pure North Recycling in Hveragerð, where Börkur Smári Kristinsson spoke about the recycling process and future plans of the company.
The second day of the meeting started with a visit to the netting factory Hampidjan in Reykjavik, where Georg Haney gave a presentation about the company and its recycling practices, followed by a tour of the factory. The partner meeting continued after this in MarEco’s offices with Sveinn Margeirsson from an Icelandic fishing company Brim, who joined the discussions on collection of EOL fishing gear and brought in fishing industry's aspect to the topics of sustainable fishing, fishing gear, and their recycling. Discussions on the progress of the project also continued from the previous day, and talks were also had about the next partner meeting, planned to be held in Ireland in the spring of 2025.
