Bauhaus Goes North -Bauhaus Housing Principles for the Norther Periphery and Arctic Region

What we do

The Bauhaus model promoted by the European Union requires we investigate, compare and optimize our approach to building housing, to find the best and most viable solutions to reduce energy use and CO2 emissions in design, construction, and operation. For this preparatory project, we intend to produce a series of new models based on best practice from each of the three regions of the NPA: North Atlantic Islands, Scandinavia and Nordic, and Ireland. The project will conclude with the main project application.

Final report

Throughout the preparatory phase of the Bauhaus Goes North project, the consortium of partners worked collaboratively to develop a comprehensive project application focused on sustainability, innovation, and architectural challenges in the Arctic region. The partners set up a series of demonstrator projects, defining standards for sustainable construction and energy efficiency. These efforts resulted in proposals for eight demonstration projects across various countries, involving key stakeholders from Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and more.

Workshops, stakeholder engagement, and monthly meetings helped shape the project’s direction, ensuring that the objectives were in line with the broader goals of the New European Bauhaus initiative. A strong focus was placed on fostering sustainable and inclusive architectural practices through collaborative pilot projects, including university campus renovations, city district planning, island development, and the renovation of historic buildings. These projects aimed to address regional needs while promoting sustainability and innovation.

The partners also expanded their network by connecting with additional partners and stakeholders, particularly through participation in events like the "Building Arctic Europe" conference. These activities strengthened the project’s foundation and positioned it for success in delivering innovative, sustainable solutions for Arctic architecture and development.
